Carpet vs. Hard Surfaces [Why Carpet is Here to Stay]

by | Dec 2, 2019 | Carpet Cleaning

To install carpet or not to install carpet? That is the question many homeowners ask over the years – from moving, to remodeling, to simply needing to be replaced after years of pets, kids, and perhaps… a not so tidy spouse.

Is it really worth it?

You may find yourself asking this question after your extended family has traipsed through the home that you worked so hard to clean in preparation for their arrival.

Guests can be fun, but cleaning up after them? Not so much.

Finally, after one too many glasses of red wine has spilled on your white carpet, you decide it’s time to break up with carpet.

It’s going to get ripped out after the new year and you decide you’ll never replace it.

Take that carpet! Take that!

But wait, before you do that, consider your home without a lick of carpet. Is that really what you want? What are some good reasons to keep carpet?

With hard surfaces, you’ll hear the clickity-clack of dogs nails sliding on hard surfaces, footsteps of boots or heels throughout the house, and voices will carry farther because there’s no carpet to act as a natural sound barrier to trap it in.

Keeping kids in bed while you’re trying to do something else or hearing late-night giggles from sleepovers might become your new challenge.

Although you might not like to think about it, carpets trap dust.

Another reason why you might want to consider getting them, ahem, cleaned.

Hard surfaces, on the other hand, don’t trap dust.

The dust, instead, bounces off onto everything nearby – furniture, toys, shelves, etc.

This requires regular maintenance to sweep and dust to keep the house clean and the dust at bay.

This is especially important to keep in mind if you have family members who are sensitive to dust and allergens.

There’s no denying there’s a certain amount of coziness when you walk into a carpeted room.

It’s a permanent blanket on the floor, inviting people to sit and chat, hang out with the dog, or play with the kids.

And it’s much more comfortable sitting on clean carpet than a hard surface.

Ok, so maybe carpets aren’t so bad after all. Maybe they are worth keeping around.

But if you’re worried about carpets constantly getting dirty and stained, there are some simple habits to put into practice:

Leave the Outdoors Outside

“Train” your kids, pets, guests, and messy spouse to help you take care of the carpet by “cleaning up” before entering the house (taking off shoes, wiping off paws).

This will help keep you sane and reduce the risk of unnecessarily dirtying up your carpet.

Have a mat outside the entryway, a bench that makes putting shoes on and off easy, a designated area for storing them, and a hard surface or area rug right when someone walks in the door to also help reduce the amount of mess brought into the house.

Mop Up Spills Right Away

Family members should also get into the habit of mopping up spills right away.

The sooner it’s cleaned up, the less likely the stain with set in.

Our Spotting Guide helps you prepare for these unexpected spills, but it also wouldn’t hurt for them to master these three clean-up solutions we detailed in a previous blog.
